It's normal for a new doll to have a slight smell when you first open it, which typically does not affect safety for use. Here's a detailed overview of the causes behind this odor, along with safe and effective methods for its removal.
1. Why Do New Dolls Have an Odor?
PVC Dolls
Material: Mainly made of PVC, which may carry a mild plastic smell when first unboxed.
Packaging: Sealed bags inside blind box packaging trap the odor, causing it to release all at once upon opening — making it feel stronger than it actually is.
Production: Painting and printing processes may leave behind faint traces of paint or industrial scent.

The fabric, stuffing, and dyeing or printing processes can also produce a mild odor when kept in sealed packaging.
2. How to Effectively Remove Doll Odor?

Air out: Place the doll outside or on a ventilated balcony, away from direct sunlight. Usually takes a few hours to a few days — 5–7 days if the smell is strong.
Wipe down: Dampen a soft cloth with diluted neutral detergent or baby shampoo, gently wipe the surface, rinse with a clean damp cloth, and air dry.
Baking soda: Put the doll in a bag or sealed container, sprinkle in baking soda, let it sit 15–20 minutes, then brush it off with a soft brush.
Coffee grounds / Tea bags: Tuck dry coffee grounds or tea bags into a sealed container with the doll for a few days — they absorb odor really well.
Deodorizing gel: Attach a stick-on deodorizing gel to the inside of a display cabinet — space-saving and effective.

Air out: Place in a ventilated area for several days — UV light helps break down odor. Just don't leave it in direct sun too long, or colors may fade.
Baking soda: Sprinkle it on evenly, let sit 15–20 minutes, brush off with a soft brush, then give it a quick cool-air blast from a hair dryer.
Wash (if allowed): Check the care label. If washable, use mild detergent and warm water, rinse thoroughly, and air dry. It may look a bit flat or messy after washing — totally normal.
Activated charcoal: Place charcoal packs around the doll and swap them out regularly.
Disinfectant spray: Use a fragrance disinfectant spray for dolls that should not be washed.
3. Important Notes
No direct sunlight: Sun exposure can warp, fade or age the plastic. Always keep dolls in a cool and ventilated spot.
No high heat: Don't soak them in hot water or use a hair dryer on the warm setting — heat can deform the plastic and damage the paint.
Store separately: Don't stack multiple new dolls together. Air them out one by one for better results.
Check for certification: Make sure the product has a 3C certification and proper labeling before buying. Avoid unverified or unbranded items.
